About
Message from the ISAPP President
According to the World Health Organization, neuropsychiatric disorders now account for the majority of the global burden of disability (GBD) among youth aged 14 to 25. Although mortality rates have decreased in every age group, they have decreased less among adolescents than in older or younger groups. Drug and alcohol abuse, smoking, motor vehicle accidents, and problems related to teen pregnancy are not only significant causes of death around the world, but have long-lasting effects on health.
Most adolescents who need mental health services do not get them. The problem is especially acute in the developing world. It is clear the challenges of limitations placed on treatment of adolescents, scarcity of resources, and problems of access to care are truly global.
ISAPP is a non-profit organization made up of mental health professionals - psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers – dedicated to improving adolescents’ well-being throughout the world. ISAPP was established in 1984 as an international professional society to fill a void in the mental health arena. It is the only multi-disciplinary international organisation devoted solely to the mental health needs of adolescents. The principle aim of the organization is to provide a forum for intellectual exchange among professionals concerned with adolescent psychology and psychiatry. ISAPP schedules national and international meetings in various parts of the world and a major international congress every four years. Prior congresses have taken place in Paris, Geneva, Chicago, Athens, Aix-en-Provence Rome, Montreal, Berlin, Ankara, and New York.
The joint meeting of the Japanese Society for Adolescent Psychiatry and ISAPP was held in Osaka, Japan June . It was an outstanding meeting that brought together adolescent psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals from around the world.
Following that, an ISAPP symposium on risk and resilience was presented at the IACAPAP Congress in Prague in July 2018.
I look forward to greeting distinguished colleagues in 2019 at the ESCAP Congress in Vienna 30 June – 2 July, and at the next ISAPP meeting in Lyons, France next summer.
